Home Rehabilitation for the Orthopedic Patient

By Kris Garland, Gentiva Health Services Public Relations

We want to build their quality of life to the best it can be and we do so through a wide range of home health care services and specialty programs.

“She was the glue that held my family together.”
“She was my mother’s advocate, companion, caregiver and friend.”
“She was my husband’s protector.”
“You have two guardian angels there.”

This type of feedback makes us feel good about what we do. At Gentiva Health Services, our goal is to bring our clients to the greatest level of independence that they can acquire. We want to build their quality of life to the best it can be and we do so through a wide range of home health care services and specialty programs.

Home Health Care 101

Home health care is health care delivered in the patient’s home. Services may include nursing, from individual visits to around-the-clock care; wound care; pain management; instruction on home medical equipment use; women’s and children’s services; newborn care; daily activity assistance, including bathing and meal preparation; and specialty rehabilitation programs in neurorehabilitation and orthopedic services. These services can be provided by several different types of professionals including registered nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, nutritionists, dieticians, infusion specialists, home health aides and personal care workers.

Gentiva Health Services: Orthopedic Program

As the nation’s leading home health care provider with a history of more than 30 years of clinical excellence and expertise in the industry, Gentiva Health Services has a highly skilled, dedicated care team located throughout our more than 200 community offices across the United States. Each year, we bring our services to more than 500,000 people across the nation.

One of our specialty programs in particular has been very well received. Gentiva’s Orthopedic Services program extends post-surgical rehabilitation services to the patient’s home environment. The company currently has more than 40 Orthopedic Programs across 13 states and expects to expand further with 12 future programs to open this year.

Patients recovering from bone and joint replacements often are treated in a subacute unit in the hospital, then moved to a skilled nursing facility or outpatient rehabilitation center.  Gentiva’s orthopedic program enables many patients to be safely and more quickly discharged from the hospital, with home care beginning as soon as 24 hours after discharge, including weekends. Although the majority of Gentiva home health locations offers rehabilitation services, our Orthopedic practices, led by a physical therapist with specialized training in orthopedics, add a greater degree of specialization to the agency’s preexisting occupational and physical therapy services.
